The Zodiac Desk Set was among the earlier patterns developed by Tiffany Studios, and is believed to have been in production by the late 1890s. The other early sets include the Etched Metal and Glass and Byzantine. The design incoroporates the figures and symbols of ancient zodiac signs. They are in low-relief, and set within medallions that are framed with interwoven banding. The zodiacal figures are stylized, and not placed in the order of the zodiac calendar.
Over seventy items were produced in a variety of finishes. These finishes include gilt and patina bronze, gold and silver dore, copper, and silver plate. The Zodiac pattern remained popular throughout its production period, and was the set of choice by President George H.W. Bush, who selected various items for his desk in the Oval Office. Pictured above is a two-compartment letter rack, a magnifier glass, a daily calendar and ink stand in the gold dore finish. All pieces are stamped: TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK and numbered.
