Arthur Dow (1857-1922) was an American artist and is considered one of the most important painters and teachers at the turn of the century. He trained in France, and taught at American art institutions, including Pratt Institute, the Art Students League, Columbia University Teachers College, and his own Ipswich Summer School of Art. He was a painter in the Barbizon style, and was influenced by "floating world" Japanese woodblock art and the Arts and Crafts movement of England. He had a unique ability to combine the various traditions. This poster was for the magazine entitled Modern Art.

Viktor Oliva (1861-1928) was a painter and illustrator who studied art in Prague and Paris, and was an important artist in the development of the Topic Salon image. He illustrated books and magazines, was Art Director of the magazine "Zlata Praha", and was one of the earliest Czech poster artists. Topic Salon was a private gallery that opened in 1894 in central Prague by bookseller and publisher Frantisek Topic. It was a premier gallery of the time and promoted contemporary poster and graphic artists. This poster by Viktor Oliva was designed for his one-man show which opened in 1896.

Adolphe Willette (1857-1926) gained fame from his work as a lithographer, painter, illustrator, caricaturist and poster artist. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and exhibited at the Paris Salon among other major French exhibitions. He became famous for his satirical characters in propaganda campaigns against Germany during WW1. Willette achieved the highest honour for a French artist when he was appointed Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1906. This image depicts a Dutch woman in traditional dress holding a tray of Van Houten hot chocolate. It is set against a background of gilded leaves.

Alice Russell Glenny is a significant American artist of the early twentieth century. She was born in Detroit, moved to New York, trained under American painter William Merritt Chase, and traveled to Paris to continue her studies. Genny was a muralist and sculptor in addtion to being a talented lithographer whose work significantly shaped American graphic design. Glenny was a member of the Twentieth Century Club in Buffalo, NY, and was active in promoting the interests of American female artists. This well known print was the cover for the Buffalo Courier Woment's Edition in 1895, and depicts a front facing woman with a flowing hair ribbon and flower blooms in her coiffured hair. The organic forms and color blocking technique is typical of the Art Nouveau style.

Etienne Moreau-Nelaton (1859-1927) was a French painter and art collector. He and his family assembled an important art collection which is currently displayed at the Musee d'Orsay and the Louvre. His own works of art were largely influenced by Edouard Manet, with family scenes and landscape being his primary subjects. Moureau-Nelaton was an accomplished illustrator, ceramicist, and designer. This poster promoted the second exhibition of women's art organized by the Union Centrale des Arts Decoratifs at the "Palais de l'Industrie - Porte VII" in Paris. It is noteworthy with its soft pastel-like browns and yellows.

George Lucas created this poster to advertise Felicien Champsaur's "Entrance of a Female Clown". Lu Lu is presumably the stage name of this lovely clownesse.

Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was a French painter, decorative artist and writer. He is well known for his association with Les Nabis, a Symbolist movement founded in 1890, and is credited with contributing theories to the cubism, fauvism, and abstract art movements. He received his training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he studied both art and philosophy. His work evolved over his lifetime, with his early work displaying religious themes, and later work possessing Asian, Art Nouveau and Neo-classicism motifs. In addtion to painting, Denis was a lithographer, muralist and teacher. The earth tones and fabric pattern in La Depeche displays the Asian influence on Denis' work.

Maurice Realier-Dumas (1860-1928) was a French painter, illustrator, and graphic artist. He trained at the Ecole Nationale de Beaux-Arts, and his worked is often categorized within the Orientalism movement. His talent was recognized among the prominant artists of the period, and his work displayed at the prestigious Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris. Realier-Dumas focused on painting, his posters are rare and classical in design. This print exemplifies his poster design, depicting a female with elongated limbs, with muted tones and simple lines.
The "Les Maitres de l'Affiche" series was offered as a subscription series to collectors. Every month for 60 months, from December 1895 through November 1900, subscribers received by mail, 4 loose sheets (Maitres) with a cover sheet. It was sold in Paris for 2.50 francs for one month's subscription, (4 Maitres) and for 27 francs for 12 months (48 maitres), plus special (bonus) plates. Maitre's were never issued in a book form, but a binding of the 12 months Maitres was offered to subscribers, at the end of the year, with a beautiful hardcover design by Paul Berthon for 8 Francs. The ""Maitres de l'Affiche,"" were issued as separate numbered sheets, referred to as ""plates"" (PL). They were numbered, with the printers name ""Imprimerie Chaix,"" in the margin at the bottom left hand corner, ""PL.1"" to ""PL.240."" In the margin at the bottom right hand corner of each, is a blind embossed stamp from a design of Cheret's. Dimentions: 11 3/8 inches x 15 3/4 inches.
